Into the Fold

Sue, Jim, and Kathy
Late last month I had the pleasure of adding three new volunteers to our hospice team:  Sue, Kathy and Jim.  Throughout the process-- from the initial contact, to the pre-training interview, to the comprehensive training itself, and now the post training interviews, I have gotten to know a lot about these three wonderful individuals.  Although each one has their own specific motivations for taking this momentous leap into the world of hospice, they all share the common threads of compassion for others, generosity of heart, and a willingness to dive in and get involved in something that will make a positive impact on the lives of others as well as their own.

They have joined an established team of experienced hospice volunteers who know what it's like to touch those who have reached the end of their life's journey, and the loved ones who care for them.  Some, like Vanessa, Kara, and Julia, spend time in nursing homes-- at the bedside or in the community room-- chatting away, reading, or just giving some extra attention to our patients there.  Others, like Carlene, Mariama, and Jessica, spend their time  visiting in private homes doing the same, with the added benefit of allowing caregivers a chance to go shopping, do yard work, or just get away for a while.  And they have all told me (and I've seen and heard for myself) how much the patients and caregivers appreciate the kindness and attention they bring to their hospice volunteer work.

Now Sue, Jim, and Kathy can begin this work themselves; a work with benefits that can't be measured in dollars and cents.  From our conversations I know that they are all very excited (and in some cases maybe a little nervous) about getting started in this very important and rewarding work.  And the entire staff, both paid and volunteer, are there to support them as they move into what for them is uncharted waters.  As their volunteer coordinator, I look forward to guiding them into the waters, and watching them grow with each new visit.

During training, Jim expressed how he hopes to find a deeper meaning in life through hospice volunteering, because life should mean more than just "punching a clock."  I have found that deeper meaning in hospice, Jim, and hope you will, too!
